Career orientation

The Shanghainese teacher’s suggestions about education on career orientation are really impressing. I used to think our middle school teachers only care about our college entrance exam results. She proves the real problem is still in the bureaucratic Chinese education system.
In fact, I feel that many of my friends from Shanghai have quite clear career goals, compared with students from provinces. My friends studying in colleges in Hong Kong and Taiwan are both impressed by the career education received by local students.
As a teacher in middle school, she knows much more about the problems and difficulties in the education system. She mentioned in the email that she tried to report to education officials about her suggestion but it is never listened to. I doubt if those top policy makers are worried about these problems. As their jobs are given by their supervisors, they don’t feel the pressure to carry out a reform, and then thousands of students are victimized by the education system. At the end, it is a political problem. But political problems are too sensitive to talk about.
Her reply to your website shows that many people are still very interested in what our education system should be. If your idea is known by more people, students, teachers, parents. Many are willing to talk about that.
Her plans in career orientation program sounds new to many of us. But it is not a new area in research on education policy. Many education schools in the US and elsewhere have already conducted such research for many decades. I believe there are also such research institutions in China. It’s just that those research results were never successfully implemented into the education system.
This forum really has a role to play in raising public awareness of the problem and hopefully pushing for a change.
