Resume Preparation

Recently more and more my friends begin to look for jobs or prepare to apply for schools in the States. All these application processes are involved with a resume requirement, but people rarely know how to “prepare” an effective as well as competitive resume for themselves. The “prepare” means not only to write down something, but also a process of organizing and sorting out things we have done and refreshing the image of ourselves in our own minds. Since I have already done these procedures for a long time and I have also talked with recruiters from big firms about resume preparation multiple times, I am more than willing to share some thoughts with my friends, YOU, to help and guide you to prepare the door knocker document – resume.

Resume is like an advertisement of us, and people will have the first impression about what kind of person we are through the one page resume. No matter what job or which school we are going to apply for, at least we have to show them a real ME. This is like start-up firms that are looking for money from angel investors, and the executives should give elevator pitches to investors to show the features of the firms and let investors believe they will bring huge amount of profits back in the near future. Therefore the resume is the most important part of any kind of application process before we even talk with recruiters in person.

Many of my friends really have hard time to prepare a resume, because they have no clue about what to write down, or if the contents are enough or appropriate. This is indeed hard in the beginning, but if you have some guidance that tell you how to prepare for it, and you will become more confidence.

As that being said, the CONFIDENCE is the core thing that we have to always keep in mind. We are selling ourselves through the resume, so we’d better have faith in ourselves first before other people choose us as candidates, right? My suggestion for the first step is to sort out ALL the activities that you have done during past few years and put them into reverse chronological order, which means the latest thing should be put in the front. If you are planning to apply for graduate school, you only need to find valuable information to the extent of high school, except that you have done extraordinary things before that time; if you are a college student and applying for a job, you only need to focus on the period of time in college.

You might realize it is truly hard to find some “achievements” that you have done during past few years, please don’t be worried. This is the reason why I highly suggest everyone starts to prepare a resume as early as possible so that we would know what we already have and what we still lack. Please don’t wait until the day that you are applying for schools or jobs. Here is an optimal solution for those who think they have nothing to share: write anything that you have done into stories with specific details that you would like to tell others. This will help us to brainstorm in order to picture a true MYSELF. I believe, in China, not everyone has the opportunity to facilitate an activity on campus, or get internship during the summer, but I also believe every one of us have some stories to tell. Stories can be something you have done for your neighbors, friends, families or professors, and these things should be the values you created, the friendship you established, the network you explored, or the problem you solved. All these things belong to your achievements, which are items that should be on your resume.

Since we have done so many things and by chance we also have tons of stories to share, we could not write down all of them within one page. Thus, we are supposed to select them out for some purposes, which are usually those characteristics recruiters are looking for on us. So what they are looking for specifically?

The answer apparently varies regarding what job or major you are applying for, but there are still many things in common. Generally speaking, schools are looking for good academic records, and interests in programs/majors that you are applying for, and leadership experiences; while big firms are primarily looking for leadership personalities and related experiences, communication skills, execution abilities, teamwork experiences, and tolerance of ambiguities. All these characteristics are something they expect to find out during the interview, thus we have to present them first in the resume so that people will get interested in our stories.

Notes:

When we are listing out working or activity experiences, we need to write down a brief description of this job or activity. For instance: if you have worked in the school library, you should not just write down “School Library” in the working experience section of your resume, and you should also include something is like “Help patrons to check out books and movies, and also help supervisors to organize books in the library”. In this way, people will get to know what kind of job that is and what you have done for it so that they can better evaluate the person through the information; otherwise it is meaningless to just put the name of the job down.

People are always looking for ACHIEVEMENTS that we have done, rather than the title we have held. For example: if you hold a position of “President of Study Department” in the student union, you definitely should avoid solely putting down the name, instead, you need to briefly describe what things you have done as holding that position, such as “I helped to facilitate all kinds of lectures, and I was also always in charge of organizing activities on campus, things are like English Drama Festival, Speech Competition, etc”. This will absolutely help others to understand your experiences and related skills.

The golden rule: resume must be no more than ONE PAGE. If you do have way more things than one page, please screen out the most valuable ones.

As for the format of the resume, it really depends on your own propensity. We can find many different types or styles of resume online, but they always include some common things that we should not ignore, such as your name, email, phone number, address, education, working/activity experience and so forth. The size of font should be appropriate, usually it is between 10 and 12 that depends on how many contents we have. The whole thing should be coherent, clear and concise.

Preparing a resume is a long-term process, and we should modify it periodically as we involved more activities. I hope this article will give you a little bit sense about how to preparing an effective and competitive resume by yourself. We know ourselves better than anyone else, and we are the best representatives for ourselves. Please quit asking others to write the resume for you, because you will otherwise miss a great opportunity to define, explore and sell yourself!
